Many people believe that healthy eating is expensive. In fact, it’s one of the leading excuses for why people don’t do it. They tell themselves that they simply can’t afford it and that they’re better off just eating their regular fare.
But is this true? Arguably not. It turns out that eating healthy is significantly less expensive than many people imagine. You don’t have to eat expensive items like fresh berries and shrimp every day. There are far cheaper options.

Lentils
Lentils are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. Not only do they contain a host of vitamins and minerals, but they also have resistant starch, a special type of carbohydrate that feeds the good bacteria in your stomach. People who eat a lot of lentils are less likely to experience weight gain. Legumes lower the glycemic load of both the meal you are eating now and subsequent meals you eat later on, even if they don’t contain any beans.
Cabbage
Cabbage is another ultra-cheap superfood that many people neglect. Regular white savoy cabbages work well in soups and stews and actually enrich the flavor significantly, reminding you of the sort of food your parents used to cook at home. Red cabbages are packed with cancer-fighting phytonutrients and work well in pickles, coleslaws, and festive fruits.
Onions

Onions are an ingredient in most home-cooked meals. And they are incredibly cheap. They’re known for being high in certain types of antioxidants and many researchers believe that they may be effective in fighting diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer.
You don’t need to eat much, either. One medium onion in a recipe is usually enough for a family of four.
Russet Potatoes
Potatoes were a staple food across much of Europe for hundreds of years. They grew well in local soils and provided a stable harvest for local people.
While russet potatoes aren’t top of the list of health foods, they are still pretty high up. They contain a significant quantity of fibre and offer B and C vitamins. They are also high in potassium which is essential in cultures that eat high salt diets, like ours.
Lemons
While some citrus fruits can be expensive, lemons tend to be quite cheap. And that’s good news since they are an important ingredient. If you want to make a lemon drop shot find the recipe here.
Bananas

Most fruits are quite expensive because of the cost of transporting and storing them. They also require a lot of water, mainly from irrigation which, again, is expensive.
But bananas are different. They are often grown in areas in the tropics with naturally high rainfall. And they don’t require a lot of expensive labor to harvest.
Plus, they’re actually quite good for you. Bananas contain a good quantity of vitamins and minerals plus healthy fibre that encourages weight loss.
Bananas have the added benefit of also being extremely convenient. They taste good on their own or combined with peanut butter. Just pop them in your pocket and you have the perfect snack.
